Moreton Bay Local History

The Traditional Owners of the land in Moreton Bay are the Quandamooka people, who have lived in the area for at least 23,000 years. The urbanization of Moreton Bay began in the late 19th century, with the construction of railways and the growth of cities such as Brisbane and Redcliffe. In the early 20th century, the region became a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming to enjoy the beaches, fishing, and natural beauty of the area.
During World War II, Moreton Bay played a strategic role in the defense of Australia, with military bases and fortifications established along the coast. The US Army built the Camp Cable near Brisbane, which became the largest military base in Australia, and the Allied Naval Headquarters was established at the Brisbane port.
